Research and Insights Executive United Kingdom Research & Insights
We are looking for a Research & Insights Executive to be part of the Research & Insights team taking responsibility for the social media analysis and research products that are vital to the strategic direction of our consultancy and engagement plans.
We Are Social’s Research & Insights team looks to deliver exceptionally high-quality results within three core service areas; Consultancy, Research & Insight and Engagement. We manipulate large sets of data, text and language in order to extract meaningful insights that can help shape recommendations and strategies.
The Research & Insights team serves both as a service to other We Are Social departments, and also works directly with clients on bespoke deep-dive projects. In addition, as the central hub for the We Are Social network the London Research & Insights team also supports other We Are Social offices.
The role of Research & Insight Executive focuses on assisting with the day-to-day delivery of reports through data collection and manipulation supported by a Senior Research & Insight Analyst. This role is a great opportunity to learn We Are Social’s tools, methodologies and reporting style, as well as how to collaborate with other teams and disciplines.
On a daily basis you will be helping to collect and manipulate large data sets and as such attention to detail and accuracy is vital. As our ideal candidate, you’re also enthusiastic about the industry and consume a wide variety of social media news looking for emerging trends and best practices.
The nature of We Are Social’s business requires a high level of flexibility, common sense and versatility. While the specific content of the role is clearly defined, the nature of the demands placed on us and the creativity of our research solutions means that the role will evolve over time and needs a ‘can do’ approach to picking projects up and making them happen.
As part of your day-to-day duties you will help to:
- Deliver a monthly social media insight reports in collaboration with your Senior Research & Insight Analyst
- Manipulate data in Excel and apply presentation techniques in PowerPoint
- Learn how to manually code data in Excel (sentiment, topics etc.)
- Run keyword research and query building
- Gather competitor benchmarking
- Identify influencers
You’ll also have opportunities to:
- Contribute to conversation audits for new and existing clients (ad hoc projects)
- Set-up monitoring dashboards (keyword research and query building)
- Run daily monitoring & alerting of negative conversations (crisis monitoring)
As part of a high performing team our Research & Insight Executives have competence in the following areas:
1. Data Manipulation
You’ll be working with large data sets and as such need to be capable of working with Excel in an accurate and rapid way.
Although not essential, the use of basic formulas, the use of pivot tables and also the ability to confidently use Excel’s native graph tools is preferable. You will learn how to use more complex formulae as part of your training.
In addition we expect a solid grounding in mathematics, including areas such as decimals, percentages, percentage changes and basic algebra.
One of your core roles is to manipulate large data sets of text and language in a way that enables you to extract insight. This involves lots of reading and the ability to summarise this into concise insights. You should be able to read rapidly and understand language and social media nuances and slang.
As an Executive you will help write reports. Therefore, your written skills must be of a high standard, with minimal spelling mistakes and sound grammar and punctuation. You are preferably an active writer, ideally a blogger.
3. Social Media Technology & Methodologies
We Are Social uses a specific tool-set of social media technology to locate, filter and identify conversations. Experience in similar tools (eg. Radian6, Sysomos, Brandwatch, TalkWalker etc.) as well as experience in building Boolean queries is preferred but will be taught as part of your training.
You will learn about the latest social media research methodologies, including Facebook Insights, EdgeRank, Facebook engagement scores, Twitter engagement scores, YouTube engagement scores, sentiment scoring and reach metrics as part of your role.
4. Planning and Organisation
Attention to detail, focus and accuracy are essential. Keeping track of your workload and regularly updating your line managers on your progress is important. Managing your own time will be essential. Deadlines need to be met and where you encounter problems, you need to address these early and in time for solutions to be found.
5. Effective Communication Skills
Communication with colleagues is important. You need to be watching those around you and learning from them. We don’t expect you to know everything – but we do expect you to ASK if you are in any doubt.
Commit to your actions – you need to take responsibility for all the tasks within your remit but also to flag any issues that you see arising. You are part of the team and a vital support function.
On occasion, you will need to start to adopt strategies, which enable you to maintain effective performance whilst under pressure. Solid logical planning, effective time management, good communication and above all the ability to manage expectations both internally and externally will help you to achieve in this area.
8. Industry Knowledge
We expect that you should be enthusiastic about the industry. Research and share the trends that are changing within the industry. Keep abreast with events, creative campaigns and news from the wider scene.
