We Are Victorious!
It was a night of firsts for the We Are Social footy team last night. A first appearance in the famous white shirt for Ollie, George and Jas. A first match played in driving rain, and a first full squad.
But most importantly a first victory for the team from Clerkenwell!
Despite the adverse weather conditions, and consecutive defeats, spirits were unusually high before kick off, with talk of victory even whispered in the taxi ride to the ground. Well at least it probably was, I wouldn’t know as Ollie and I took on the treacherous rain soaked rush hour traffic by bike.
Huddled together in the reception of the changing rooms before kick off, some last minute tactics and team talks were given before we took to the pitch.
And straight from the kick off We Are Social pressed high up the pitch, forcing mistakes and could have been a couple of goals up within in a minute. But it didn’t take long for the constant pressure to be turned into a goal. After some nice link play, the ball broke to debut boy Ollie who calmly rolled it past the keeper. One nil to We Are Social!
The pressure continued and Ollie then grabbed a quickfire second, before arguably the goal of the match was scored by yours truly; it was only two touches, but the first rolled the defender with a beautiful Zidane-like pirouette, with the second sending the keeper the wrong way. Three nil up, six minutes played – we were in dreamland.
Some sloppy defensive play allowed FC Virgo back into the match with a goal, before Ollie bagged another to claim a debut hat trick making it 4-1 to We Are Social at half time.
FC Virgo came flying out the traps at the start of the second, claiming a quick fire goal against substitute keeper Jas (who had admitted pre-match that he was bricking it), before Ollie, getting greedy now claimed his fourth making 5-2.
The next goal was a thing of beauty from our little Spanish maestro. Jaime, picking up the ball in his own half looked up, and seeing nothing on took it on himself, and with laser guided precision stroked the ball into the far corner giving the keeper no chance. Beautiful stuff and it was 6-2.
At this point the showboating started, and in truth we got cocky, giving away another two sloppy goals, making the final minutes unnecessarily nervy, but the result was never in doubt. Four goals for Ollie, one each for Joe and Jaime and some solid debuts all round.
The final whistle blew and it was a famous maiden victory for We Are Social. Now to start climbing the table.
