We Are Social 2 – Edelman 7

After defeat against Razorfish, injuries meant the team was changed for last night’s game against Edelman. But it was an all too familiar result.

Pre-match, the mood was very buoyant – despite being pointless in 2012, and our last game against Edelman ending in a 6-0 defeat, we were hopeful of stopping the rot. Joe Weston, returning from diplomatic leave, established his authority early on with some cute touches, and débutante Matt provided some much-needed steel in the tackle. Nonetheless, we quickly went 4-0 down, in spite of a string of saves from Dan.

A good goal from Joe got us back into the game, and after Edelman cheaply gave the ball away, we got another goal back to make it 4-2. Despite still being behind, we were in the ascendancy.

With Ed defending solidly and Peter repeatedly winning the ball back through his astute positioning, there was real hope in the ranks that we could pull off a sensational comeback, one which would have produced a story worthy of telling any potential future grandkids and would have brought us a hero’s welcome at work this morning.

Then, it happened. Matt won a penalty through his pressure on the keeper, which made him handle outside the box. A goal here, and we would have become favourites to win the game. Instead, I had my penalty saved, and as we tired, we conceded three more goals to go down 7-2. And our goalkeeper was our best player.

Oh dear.
