A Geography of Twitter

An insightful visualization from the Oxford Internet Institute, based on a sample of 20% of all the geocoded tweets published on Twitter between March 5 and March 13 2012. The box size denotes the number of geocoded tweets per country with the shade/intensity denoting Twitter’s penetration of the internet population of that country.

Japan is shown deceptively small (probably due to the low smartphone penetration there, meaning not many tweets are geocoded). The real surprise is the small size of India, a country that is massive on Facebook but apparently not on Twitter, and Australia, which you’d expect to be not far off Canada’s size.
