Did that mouth watering #foodporn that popped up on your Instagram feed inspire you to get to the supermarket to recreate the recipe? Did Kylie Jenner’s ever-changing hair colour influence you to grab the bottle and ‘go green’? Perhaps you picked up a bar (or share sized bag) of your favourite chocolate for elevensies after spotting it on Facebook… don’t worry, we’ve all been there.

Guilteeeeeeeee!!! Is this super easy chicken and potato hash with poached egg a bit of you? ? This is one from my book #Leanin15 ????? #Guilteeeee #Leanin15 #health #fitness #nutrition #lunch #food #fitfam #foodie #foodporn

If you can relate to these questions, you’re not alone. As many as 78% of consumers say their purchases are influenced by a brand’s social media posts. For the FMCG sector – a vertical where almost every product category is saturated and consumers are reluctant to change their brand allegiances – social media presents an opportunity to swing the needle of a customer’s purchasing compass in your brand’s direction.

Social media has become an addition to our daily routine, it’s the first thing we check when our alarm chimes in the morning and the last thing we check before we go to sleep. For many consumers, YouTube has replaced TV and Instagram has filled the role of magazines.

However, brands we don’t follow have managed to weave their way onto our social feeds and this can make us feel like we’re being sold to. Instead of shoehorning in content, brands need to produce authentic, relevant content which feels natural to the platform it appears on. Get it wrong, and you risk doing more harm than good to your brand’s reputation.

At the FMCG Social Summit on the 26th of April at 5.30pm, we’ll share insights and practical lessons around using social and digital to its full potential. But don’t just take it from us – we’ll also have some of the industry’s biggest marketing big-wigs sharing their knowledge.
