Social networking could overtake TV in the not so distant future

GlobalWebIndex has created an infographic detailing the average time per day spent on TV compared to social networking or messaging.

The chart shows that from 2012 to 2016 the time internet users spent social networking and messaging has been steadily increasing. In contrast the time devoted to TV has remained relatively stable with a slight decrease from 2015. The chart also shows that over each year that passes, 16-24s are spending a larger portion of time social networking rather than watching scheduled TV programmes.

So although watching television is still a dominant activity, the data reveals that if these patterns continue, social networking will eventually take over TV.
