Tuesday Tune-Up #287
So, a cop, a comedian, and a community manager walk into a bar….
No, that’s not the start of a bad joke. It’s the best story on the internet today. If you haven’t seen the amazing content firing from the NSW Police Force Facebook page in last 12 months, you may live under a rock. So who is this MasterChef of brilliant memery? Sydney’s own Dejan Stojadinovic has finally shown his face(book), and it’s been revealed that his team of just three are behind some of the most hilarious posts on the platform this year.
Their recipe for success? A hearty mix of pop culture, current trends, and key law enforcement messaging.
Concerning research behind social media and children’s mental health
A recent UK study titled #StateOfMind by Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) and the Young Health Movement (YHM) has examined both the positive and negative effects of social media on young people’s health. Respondents were asked to score each social media platform based on 14 health and wellbeing-related criteria.
YouTube outranked all others for positive contributions to children’s self-esteem and overall state of mind, and Instagram unsurprisingly scored the lowest.
- YouTube (most positive)
- Snapchat
- Instagram (most negative)

Instagram launches selfie filters
When it comes to social, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…Well, at least when it comes to Snapchat vs. Instagram. Insta is infamous for stealing Snapchat’s spotlight, and this time they’ve done so with Snapchat’s staple – the selfie filter. So far, there are only eight available, none of which include sexualised dog snouts. Instead, you can rock your own koala ears with nerd glasses, because that’s something I’ve definitely been waiting to send my friends.
Instagram may be launching Location Stories in Explore
Here we go again! Just two months after Snapchat proudly unveiled Stories Search, the frenetic folks at Instagram have started testing the same feature in NYC.
So, how does it work? Location Stories aggregate tagged geo content for users to view the location in last 24 hours, including any key events that are on there. The one key difference is that Instagram may be using #hashtags and keywords to allow for greater search experience for the user in Explore.
Facebook tests Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Messenger unification
Word on the street is that Facebook is testing out cross-app notifications for Facebook, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, where you would receive notifications for them all in one place and be able to switch instantly between them. This may make ignoring people more difficult, but overall I’m a fan of the efficiency.
Facebook Messenger gets a makeover
Aside from notifications, Facebook Messenger is having a small aesthetic re-jig. In an attempt to highlight the many communication options within the app, a new tab will be appearing at the top of the app that has different tabs for messages, active users and groups. Moving this tab to the top frees up more space in the main navigation bar at the bottom for things like games.
Facebook can now auto-create Canvas ads from a URL
Facebook is now automating some of the creation of Canvas ads by offering you the option to input a URL and let it pull images and associated destination links. Great for those of us who still may be using Microsoft Paint to whip up cool content.
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone comes back to the fold
First of all, can we just take a moment to take in this guy’s name – BIZ, that’s B.I.Z Stone. Ok, now that that’s done, an announcement has been made that Biz is BACK after tragically leaving Twitter six years ago, and he’ll be taking up a role focused on company culture. Mr Stone wrote:
“It’s important that everyone understands the whole story of Twitter and each of our roles in that story … I’ll shape the experience internally so it’s also felt outside the company.”
Anyway, getting back to serious Biz-ness…
Last call for tickets to our Vivid Sydney session!
After a sellout debut at last year’s Vivid Ideas Exchange in Sydney, we’re thrilled to announce our 2017 session – Marketing To The Machines: Why Algorithms Will Define The Future Of Everything. Similar to last year, this ideas-based breakfast will host We Are Social’s global consultant, Simon Kemp, as co-presenter alongside our managing director, Suzie Shaw.
“Algorithms determine everything from the optimum kitten story to reframing ethics and morality. We’ll examine how they can help solve some of life’s most existential questions,” Suzie told the media this week. “It’s a big order for breakfast as we’ll be exploring the powerful and all-pervasive nature of algorithms: what they are, where they’ve come from and where they’re going tomorrow.”
This is Simon Kemp’s second consecutive appearance at Vivid Ideas, after co-presenting 2016’s data-driven storytelling session. As well as working with We Are Social and authoring its annual global digital report, he founded Kepios and heads up APAC for Contagious Insider Consulting.
If you’re interested in joining our team for a riveting morning of marketing insights and like-minded business professionals, feel free to book here. Tickets are $20 (plus booking fee) and include breakfast. We hope to see you there!
