2017 has undeniably been a year of ups and downs with its fair share of ‘how the hell did that happen'. And of course many of these moments and events have played out across social media for the world to follow, both dividing opinions and bringing people together.

In its year-end round up, Facebook highlighted the top three moments that sparked conversation (International Women’s Day, Super Bowl 51, and Las Vegas Violence), the times of crisis which brought us closer (the earthquake in Mexico, Hurricane Harvey, and the Manchester bombing), and the events which connected people offline as well as online (the total solar eclipse and Women’s march on DC).

Twitter highlighted the most shared and liked tweets of the year - Carter Wilkerson's quest for free nuggets, and Barack Obama’s message of hope.

Not to be left out, Instagram shared its most liked post of the year - Beyonce's maternity photo (who runs the world!), as well as its top hashtags (#love, #fashion), most Instagrammed cities (New York and Moscow), most followed celebs (Selena Gomez and Cristiano Ronaldo) and more.

Over on YouTube we saw the now-traditional #YouTubeRewind video, celebrating the videos, people, music and memes that made 2017. Expect flying influencers and a few tunes that you just can't get out of your head.

GIFY presented the most animated End of Year list of them all, with its 25 GIFs of 2017 - giving top spot to the Love Gnome with 340 million monthly views … well, who doesn’t love that little guy.

And finally, Tumblr unveiled its favorite things in 2017 which included everything from athletes and models, to K-pop and action movies - all chosen through data collected and sorted via its ‘pleasingly scientific’ Fandometrics technique.

So, to quote Tumblr. “We did it. We made it through! 12 months. 52 weeks. 365 days. 8,760 hours”. And looking back, maybe it hasn’t been too bad after all.
