#HappyBirdDay: An interactive digital site to celebrate a decade of Twitter
On March 21st 2006, Jack Dorsey typed ” Just setting up my twttr ” into his newly-created social micro blogging platform. This marked the first ever tweet; ten years later, Twitter has more 320 million users worldwide, using 140 characters (for now…) to create and join global conversations.
Today, Twitter turns 10 years old – and what a decade it’s been. Since the platform’s inception, we’ve seen the biggest moments in society, business and culture shared by the global online community through tweets.
So to celebrate the 10th birthday of this iconic social media giant, we’ve created happybirdday.wearesocial.com, an interactive digital microsite that shows 100 of the biggest stories from the last 10 years, represented by 100 tweets.

From #BringBackOurGirls and Peace for Paris, to Oreo’s Dunk in the Dark, ‘God’s’ first tweet and Miley Cyrus’s ‘free the nipple’ post, we can see the diversity and scale of Twitter’s impact globally. We’ve also thrown in a little of our own history for good measure too, including some incredibly insightful first tweets from our co-founders Nathan McDonald and Robin Grant.

With this site we’ve chosen what we feel to be 100 of the best stories of the last decade on Twitter, but we’d also love to hear from people who disagree with our selection. You can share and discuss the re-discovered content using our hashtag, #HappyBirdDay. So, I hope you enjoy browsing the site, and will join us in celebrating a decade of social media revolution… #HappyBirdDay Twitter – here’s to the next 10 years!
